Residential water heating equipment
The short answer

Home Renovation Savings lists a $500 rebate for qualifying heat-pump water heaters through its assessed, bundled-upgrade pathway. A water-heater purchase alone is not enough: confirm the home, replacement equipment and required upgrade combination before work begins.

Treat the rebate as part of a renovation plan

A household replacing its hot-water system may also be considering insulation, windows or air sealing. Discuss the complete plan before choosing which work to do first. The assessed pathway requires an initial home evaluation and at least two qualifying measures. Separate quotes are useful, but the application must follow the program’s sequence.

Do the initial assessment before the work

Contact an approved service organization and arrange the required initial evaluation. Ask which proposed measures count for your specific home and what documentation is required. Your advisor’s report should inform the work. If you have already installed equipment, ask the administrator about your situation rather than assuming a later inspection can replace the initial step.

Check the exact model and replacement conditions

Keep the proposed model number, specification and existing water-heater details together. Confirm the ENERGY STAR requirement and the program’s rules for the fuel and equipment being replaced. Ask the service organization to identify any mismatch before you sign. A heat-pump product label or salesperson’s estimate is not an approval letter.

Ask about leased equipment explicitly

If you are considering an Enbridge Sustain water-heater agreement, disclose the ownership and payment arrangement during the program review. Ask who applies, who must provide invoices and who receives any approved rebate. Do not carry a heat-pump space-heating rebate rule over to water heating: the measures have different requirements. Get a project-specific answer in writing.

Keep a complete project file

Save the initial evaluation, product eligibility details, itemized invoices and installation dates. Arrange the follow-up evaluation through the correct service organization and confirm that the documentation has been submitted. Keep the rebate receivable separate from funds required to install the equipment. That prevents an expected payment from becoming an unexpected short-term cash shortage.

How our team helps

Our free assessment helps you organize priorities and identify the program questions that need answers. If the rebate requires a registered energy evaluation, we help identify that additional step. We can compare the proposed hot-water system with Enbridge Sustain options and other ways to pay, while the program administrator determines eligibility and payment.

Common questions

Is the $500 rebate for every new water heater?

No. It applies to qualifying heat-pump water heaters within the relevant Home Renovation Savings pathway, not all tank or tankless replacements.

Can I install first and apply later?

The assessed pathway requires an initial evaluation before work. Confirm the correct sequence with an approved service organization.

Is your free assessment the same as the program evaluation?

Our free assessment is the initial homeowner review. A program-required evaluation must meet that program’s registered-advisor and documentation requirements.
